5th Graders Visit Harvey House

Mrs. Melvin took her 5th graders to Harvey House to hear a presentation from Director Jackie Rivera. The students were given a short history of the ministry to the poor and homeless. She said that the verse from Matthew 25:35 has inspired her. "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in..." She later took the students downstarirs to the food pantry and told them how the food was ordered, delivered and stored. The students asked her many questions and wanted to know what will happen with the food and with the hungry when the Harvey House is closed during construction.

My feelings after going to Harvey House were, I felt a feeling of guilt over me, because I would ask for toys and games, while Jackie told us about people who don't have houses and are living in there car as we speak.

I want God to humble my spirit and to not look down on those who need help. I think that helping others gives you a chance to get closer with God and wanf to go out and help more. MR

Ms. Jackie told us that their are a lot of different people who come to Harvey House. She doesn't always accept people from Chicago because those people could be going from pantry to pantry and steal food.

My feelings after that day was that I should help the needy. Jackie talked to us about people who are like us, but don't have things that most people usually have. Jackie said that they order 1,000's of pounds of meat and canned goods from the Chicago Food Depository. We can help by buying a can or two and donate it to Restoration Minirtries, also we can say to people in stores "God bless you," FR
